METR, pronounced meter, is a research nonprofit that evaluates frontier AI models to inform the public about their risks and capabilities. It measures whether and when AI systems might pose catastrophic risks to society, publishes risk assessment reports on specific models, and builds evaluation frameworks and tools such as Hawk. METR also advises governments and AI developers on methods for assessing risk, and its site cites partnerships with bodies including the European AI Office.
